Rye is deep dune sand from the foreshore across to the back beach, and sand changes what a retaining wall has to do. It is not heavy, but it will not stand up on its own, and it travels. A Rye wall that loses integrity in the face does not lean first, it hollows out behind, so the garden above drops while the wall still looks straight from the street.
The retaining wall builders we work with know this ground. We are a referral service, not a construction company, so your job goes straight to an experienced, insured local builder who works Rye.
Materials that suit Rye
Concrete sleeper walls are the practical default because the solid sleeper face keeps sand where it belongs and the posts carry the load independent of the ground. Block retaining walls work with a footing designed for sand. Timber is common on older blocks and is usually what is being replaced. Behind any of them, geotextile fabric is the critical detail, as the drainage page sets out.
What to budget
Guide pricing only. A wall about a metre high runs from roughly $200 per metre in timber to $700 or more per metre in stone and engineered block, with concrete sleepers in between. Footing work in sand costs more than in firm soil because the excavation has to be battered back and the holes take more concrete. Access along sandy tracks can add to it. The retaining wall cost guide has the full ranges, and a site visit is the only way to price your block honestly.
Approvals work the same here as across the shire. Councils and the VBA set height and engineering thresholds for retaining walls in Victoria, and the builders we work with confirm what your wall needs before quoting.
Frequently asked questions
Why has the ground behind my wall dropped?
Sand has escaped through the face or into an unfiltered gravel column. The wall may still be sound, but the void behind it needs fixing before it is not.
Can a timber wall work in sand?
It can at garden height with good drainage and a tight face. For anything structural, most builders will steer you to concrete sleepers.
Do holiday rental properties get treated differently?
The wall does not, but the job can. Agree access and a photo record if you are not going to be on site.
