Red Hill South is rolling farmland, orchards and small vineyards on the gentler side of the ridge. The gradients are kinder than Red Hill proper, but the ground is the same red soil and the catchments are still long. Most of the retaining work here is practical: a cut for a shed or a machinery pad, a bank beside a farm track, a terrace to make a garden workable near the house.
To be clear on what we do: we are a referral service only. We pass your enquiry to experienced, insured local retaining wall builders who work across Red Hill South.
Materials and what suits Red Hill South
Concrete sleeper walls are the rural workhorse. Block retaining walls take loads from sheds and vehicles above. Stone and boulder walls suit the setting and drain well where machine access allows. Timber still has a place on low garden terracing. Drainage with an upslope cut-off is the detail that makes any of them last, as covered on the drainage page.
What to budget
Guide pricing only. A wall about a metre high runs from roughly $200 per metre in timber to $700 or more per metre in stone and engineered block, with concrete sleepers in between. Area, load and cartage are the drivers. Farm access is generally good, which keeps the labour side reasonable. The retaining wall cost guide has the full ranges, and a site visit is the only way to price your block honestly.
Councils and the VBA set height and engineering thresholds for retaining walls in Victoria, and the builders we work with confirm what your wall needs before quoting. Check your specific site with Mornington Peninsula Shire Council or a registered building surveyor.
Frequently asked questions
Does a shed cut-in need engineering?
If the wall carries ground under or beside a structure, generally yes. Ask before the shed is ordered, because the wall affects the pad.
Can a farm track bank be stabilised without a full wall?
Sometimes, with battering, planting and drainage. A builder who suggests that rather than selling you a wall is worth listening to.
