What retaining walls cost
As a rough 2026 guide, a wall about a metre high runs from around $200 per metre for timber up to $700 or more per metre for stone and engineered block, with concrete sleepers in between. Height, access, soil, drainage and engineering move every number, which is why these are guide figures and quotes are free. Our retaining wall cost guide breaks down the ranges by material and the questions that make quotes comparable.
Why Peninsula walls fail
The Mornington Peninsula is hard country for retaining walls. Blocks drop away steeply at Mount Martha, McCrae and Arthurs Seat and load walls from above. Deep dune sand from Rye through to Portsea runs out from behind a wall that was never drained or faced properly. The red volcanic soils of the Red Hill and Main Ridge ridgelines hold water on long slopes. And on the Western Port side, around Somerville, Tyabb, Hastings and Bittern, heavier clay loams swell every wet winter and push. Most local failures trace back to one missing thing: drainage. Water, not weight, is what kills walls here, which is why drainage behind walls gets its own page, and why a wall that is already moving should go straight to leaning or collapsed wall.
